Why do dogs hate the mail carrier so? Well, maybe not all dogs; but at least Pup does. Every single day, it's a battle when Mailman comes to deliver the mail. He usually shows up between 11:30 and noon, but I don't need to check the time to know when he gets here - Pup makes it known, loud and clear, that Mailman is here. He begins howling, barking, going NUTS the second Mailman starts making his way up to the house. The closer he gets, the louder Pup gets; and if Pup is outside when Mailman gets here, well it's even worse. He runs at the gate, yelping and howling as if the devil himself were at the door dropping off the mail.
Mind you, Pup is not like this with anyone else who comes to the door. It's just the mail carrier; and it doesn't really matter if it's a different mail carrier than usual, such as when Mailman goes on vacation - same reaction. I think it's pretty funny, but I do feel bad for Mailman who must roll his eyes, bracing himself for the annoyance, every time he has to come to our house.
Today Pup and I went for a stroll, and on our way home, we ran into Mailman. Pup was surprisingly not at all bothered by Mailman, and was his usual, friendly self. I guess the problem is only when Mailman approaches the house?
In any event, Mailman produced a treat from his pocket and asked Pup if he "could buy his friendship"? Pup gobbled up the treat of course, and Mailman and I discussed whether tomorrow would be the usual debacle.
Somehow, I don't think that this battle is over yet - and unfortunately, it's one that I don't think poor Mailman stands a chance of winning.
Happy June, ya'll!!
