I was recently told by a couple of people that I utilize the word "like" way too much. This is kind of news to me. While I know that I do use "like" more than just for comparative purposes, I never really thought that used it too much in speaking. Someone commented that recently during class I said "like" about 30 times while giving an answer. The thought of that made me cringe - and set me on a new crusade, to at least for the most part, obliterate "like" from my vocabulary.
I guess you could say that I use "like" the way someone might use "um" while speaking; but I realize that overuse of "like" may make me sound ditzy or dumb. I don't really mind being considered a little flaky, because realistically speaking here, I can be extremely flaky at times; but I think that can be endearing to a certain extent, and let's face it, it's part of who I am, and I can't really change that; but I don't want to be considered dumb, because I certainly am not. I also want to become a respected lawyer, not the laughing-stock of the ABA. So with that in mind, I am going to try really hard to not say "like" conversationally anymore; and everytime I do, I'm going to smack myself in the face. I know, that's like totally going to hurt!

Have It Val's Way
I came across this today and thought it was fairly bizarre: Burger King planning on making a movie? I don't know how much truth is in this, but it brings me to discuss a topic that has had me disturbed for some time - the uncanny similarity between the Burger King in BK's recent commercials and Val Kilmer. You be the judge:

LOOK AT THE SIMILARITIES!!! Slap a beard and a crown on him ------->
and you have him!
<---------
In any event, if there is a Burger King movie in the works, and if it should happen to feature the Burger King, I really hope that Kilmer is considered for the role, because personally, I don't think you could find a more true-to-life representation.

LawNut and Pup Go To the Vet

Last week it was time for Pup's yearly visit to the vet, so off we went. I made sure that he had pooped beforehand, because I know that he has a tendency to want to poop once he gets to the vet, and this can oftentimes be an embarrassing ordeal.
When we got to the vet, Pup insisted on harrassing every dog that came in there. Mind you, Pup weighs 90 pounds, so a lot of people don't really appreciate Pup's good natured harrassment. Finally, apparently the staff had enough of his antics and put us in the room to wait for the doctor. Now, Pup gets REALLY excited when he knows that he's going to see the doctor. For whatever reason, he really likes this one vet that we always see, Dr. Pets, and it's like he knows that when we go there, he's going to see Dr. Pets. We sat and waited, and Pup started to get antsy, walking around the room, anxiously awaiting Dr. Pets' arrival. Suddenly, however, I saw Pup pop a squat - and out came a MOUNTAIN of poop!!!! It was enormous!! And the stench was enough to nearly bring tears to my eyes!! As soon as the nurse and Dr. Pets entered the room, I thought they were going to pass out from the smell!! Even after it was cleaned up, the stench remained.
The exam began, Pup got his nails trimmed, and then it was time to....dum, dum dum dum...drain the anal glands. For anyone that doesn't know, dogs have these glands in their butts that release a weird smell sometimes, kind of like a skunk. Most of the time they take care of themselves, but sometimes they get a little full and start to smell all the time, and need to be drained by the vet. So poor Dr. Pets got to work on taking care of that aspect of the visit, and honestly, the odor that came out of there made the poop smell like a bunch of roses. Needless to say, once we let that room, it was RIPE. I honestly couldn't wait to get out of there!!! Thankfully, it was over relatively quickly, and now Pup is happy as can be!! Woof woof!

Oh, Jakey Jakey!

[Sigh......] I think today's Oprah was a repeat - she had on the cast of Brokeback Mountain. WOOO WEEEE is Jake Gyllenhaal fine...wow. I've been a fan of his since the obscure but fantastic Donnie Darko, and lordy lord, that boy just keeps getting cuter and cuter and cuter. I was supposed to read for class, but I watched Oprah instead. There was no way I could turn away from those baby blues once they came on the TV. He mentioned that during the filming of Brokeback he was getting over an ended relationship - was that girl nuts?? Granted, maybe he broke up with her, but still.....ok I'm going to go ogle over Jake pics....[sigh.......]

Ooh, La La!!

Sorry I've been slacking on the postings. I'm finally over my dreariness regarding Law Review, thanks to you, my fine readers. Law Review, Shlaw Review, right? I'm still going to be a kickass attorney (hopefully)!!!!
I have a post that I've been ruminating over for a couple of days and just need to write it out, but I'm at work at the moment and have all my blogs to read up on, all the while attempting to look busy and engrossed in actual office work so that I can justify what they pay me here, so here's what I have for now:
I have acquired a new food obsession - Dannon la Creme Mousse in French Vanilla. The website proclaims that it's so good, you can even have it for dessert, and they're not kidding. It really is that yummy. Apparently there is also a version of the mousse that has chocolate pieces in it. Chocolate!! I really may have to try that one next time I'm at the food store, because it sounds delish. Au revoir!

Feeling Strangely Not So Fine

I found out today with a 99.96% probability that I did not make it onto a law journal at my school. I am very distressed about this. It could be that I'm seriously PMS'ing today, but when I got the news earlier today, I nearly started to cry. My head is filled with horrific thoughts of not getting a decent job after graduation, of not even making it to graduation, that maybe I'm just a moron, etc. You get the picture. So needless to say, not a great day today.
As I was wallowing in my own misery and self-pity, I browsed over to The Littlest Tortfeasor and found she had posted a variation on the quiz that I did in my last post. Because I have nothing else to add today, and tomorrow is the 4th of July which somehow always makes my stomach hurt, I'm doing the same meme/quiz/whatever you want to call it. Give me a day, the chipper LawNut will be back tomorrow, but for today, I'm going to be sad.
THE RULES
1. If you have an iPod or similar technology, go to your Top 25 Most Played. (I'm cheating here, I have no patience to do 25)
2. Pick a lyric from each.
3. Post the lyric on your blog.
4. Have commentators guess what the song is - I'll post the answers with credit to who guessed. You get the picture, people.
Oh yea - no internet cheating! (Like I would ever know...)
*****************************************************************
1. I've got to run to keep from hiding, and I'm bound to keep on riding, and I've got one more silver dollar.
2. You're my shrinking water supply.
3. I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes are mirror images and when we kiss they're perfectly aligned. - Such Great Heights, Postal Service - Littlest Tortfeasor
4. Help, I have done it again. I have been here many times before.
5. You wear sandals in the snow. - Building a Mystery, Sarah McLachlan - Lawmommy
6. Well, there's a girl that lives up the block. Back in school she could turn all the boys heads. - Glory Days, THE BOSS!!! Good job, Dicta!
7. I have a picture pinned to my wall: an image of you and of me and we're laughing and loving it all. - Hold Me Now, Thompson Twins - you go w/your bad ass '80s self, Tommy Lawyer!
8. I lay by the ocean making love to her with visions clear.
9. I put myself in this position and I deserve the imposition; but you don't even know I'm alive, and this pounding in my heart just won't die. - Burning Up, Madonna - you go, Lawmommy!
10. I'd pay the devil to replace her.
11. I remember thinking, I'll go on forever only knowing that I'll see you again. - I'll Back You Up, Dave Matthews Band - Littlest Tortfeasor strikes again!
12. What I want is what I've not got, and what I need, is all around me. - Jimi Thing, Dave Matthews Band - Littlest Tortfeasor sure knows her DMB!! :-)

Test Your Movie Skillz

I copied this meme from The BLS and thought I'd do it because I absolutely love movies! Have fun!
The Rules
1. Pick eleven of your favorite movies.
2. Pick one of your favorite quotes from each movie.
3. Post the quotes on your blog.
4. Have commentors guess what the movie is.
5. Place the guesser's name directly after the quote.
6. Extra points for knowing the actor/character's name.
Good luck!
1. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? (Napoleon Dynamite, Diedrich Bader's character Rex - The BLS)
2. What am I? A schmuck on wheels? (Goodfellas, Morrie - The BLS)
3. What have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully?
4. Well, isn't that what you're supposed to do with shit? Scrape it up with a little shovel?
5. Ahh, I'm going to have to go ahead and ask you to come in on Sunday, too. (Office Space, Bill Lumbergh - The Namby Pamby)
6. Lying's the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off - but it's better if you do.
7. Once again, things that could've been brought to my attention YESTERDAY! (The Wedding Singer, Adam Sandler's character - HMC)
8. I'm coming apart! Mother of God, I'm coming apart!
9. Allright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill! Assholes and elbows!(Aliens - The BLS)
10. I don't want to get you drunk, but, ah, that's a very fine Chardonnay you're not drinking. (American Psycho - Tommy Lawyer)
11. I don't know about you, but I intend on writing a strongly worded letter to the White Star Line about all of this. (Titanic - Leonardo DiCaprio's character - RPM)
BONUS QUESTION (I think it's an exceptionally tough one only because not everyone loves this movie)
12. I'm not in love with him. I'm in love with ghosts... And so is he, he's in love with ghosts. (The English Patient, Hanna - The BLS)
I have to give The BLS a total Wayne's World "we're not worthy" bow here for totally rocking so many of the answers to this quiz, INCLUDING what I thought was the pretty difficult bonus question!! You are the movie guru!!

Eh.......

Found a link on Pink is the New Blog to Jessica Simpson's website where there is streaming audio of her new song, A Public Affair. You can check it out for yourself here.
I don't know...not that I'm a huge fan of her anyway except to make fun of her constant idiocy, but I'm not impressed. Sounds like there is some sampling here, which I'm never too big on anyway. But this will probably be one of those songs that the radio stations will play into oblivion, unfortunately.

Nut...LawNut...
Found this on Here is No Why, and just had to post it when I saw the result. Too fun.
You scored as James Bond, Agent 007. James Bond is MI6's best agent, a suave, sophisticated super spy with charm, cunning, and a license's to kill. He doesn't care about rules or regulations and somewhat amoral. He does care about saving humanity though, as well as the beautiful women who fill his world. Bond has expensive tastes, a wide knowledge of many subjects, and his usually armed with a clever gadget and an appropriate one-liner.

&@#$*%!

Tonight Hubby and I were out with some friends at a popular sushi restaurant in the City. We were having a fabulous time, and I of course had too much to drink. In the midst of eating my delicious meal of spicy tuna and eel avocado, I didn't pay attention to what my chopsticks were picking up, and put into my mouth a gigantic. blob. of. wasabi. Yes. A whole blob of wasabi. I think I can honestly say that it was the most horrific pain I have ever experienced in my life. For a moment there, I thought that I might pass out at the table. It was indescribable. Thankfully, it was over relatively quickly, but I still feel like I might have some wasabi in my nose. Ick. I'm going to sleep it off.

Overheard at The Firm
Clerk 3: Is it Partner 1's birthday today?
Me: I don't know, why?
Clerk 3: Well there was talk of banners and a cake around the office today.
Clerk 1: Oh...no, it's not his birthday...he's just going on vacation for two weeks...

One Down...Two to Go

I am happy to announce...I am officially a 2L. I realize that I finished exams over a month ago, so technically you could say that I finished my first year of law school then; but I have been hesitant to really consider myself a 2L until I got all of my grades back, lest I failed something. That is just be being paranoid, I realize, but so be it. So today, I am a 2L! YAY!! (How lovely of the profs to have finally gotten around to grading those exams...I'm so glad they didn't take their time or anything like that.)
I keep thinking back to this time last year - Hubby and I were trying to find a house closer to where I would be going to school. We were incredibly stressed out. I was completely slacking off in Cubicle Hell because I knew I was quitting in a month and I loved it. I was terrified of starting school. I was convinced that I would be an utter and complete failure and let everyone in my life down over this endeavor, including and especially myself. A year later I find that I have a little more confidence, I know a little more about the law, and although things are still stressful, there is a light at the end of the tunnel in that hopefully I can get through this and become an attorney.
I guess, one year out, this is the only wisdom I can offer anyone who is about to embark on the law school journey. Is it terrifying? Yes, especially before you start. Then you start and it is the hardest and most academically challenging thing situation you've ever found yourself in; but somehow, you're doing it. Then finals roll around and you literally want to set your hair on fire rather than sit for these exams, but again, somehow you do it; and then you turn around and a year is in the can, and you don't know how you did it, you don't know how you'll do it again, but it's happening. So for anyone starting, go to class, do the reading, study your butt off, but remember to have fun, make friends, and don't take yourself too seriously - because in the end, people won't remember that you ranked first in your class as much as they will remember that you were a jerk or a really cool person; and sometimes, who you know and what opinion they have of you might pull you through more than a transcript ever will. Good luck 1Ls to be!

Surprisingly Effective, Without the Melanoma

I'm a big fan of "products." I love to try out new hair products, skin products, makeup, you name it, I like to try it out. However, my love of products is usually countered by an acute skepticism of said products, in that I will usually try something out anticipating that it's not going to work quite like it says that it will. Most of the time, I am right. Furthermore, I don't think I need to reiterate that I really like getting and being tan all summer long.
That brings me to the subject of today's post. Recently I read a post by Elle Woods noting that her Jergens self-tanner was working nicely. Since I have been feeling that my vaca tan was starting to fade away, and I always love me some new moisturizer, I decided to give the Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer a try. The result? I'm impressed. It smells nice going on, doesn't give off very much of that strange after-self-tanner-burnt-skin-stench, and within A DAY I was getting compliments on my freshly golden hue. Also, it doesn't make you orange, as there are different degrees you can choose from, either fair, medium, or tan skin tones. So I think I will rely on this for the duration of the summer since classes and working at The Firm isn't leaving much sunning time for the LawNut. And I've heard through the grapevine that laying out isn't that good for you anyway. ;-)

I'm SO Excited!

For anyone who knows me, I am a HUGE HUGE Nicholas Sparks fan. HUGE. I have read every single one of his books. Some more than once. Or twice. His writing is just amazing, and his stories are so captivating and heartbreaking, I can't even stand it. I have cried reading every single book, and every one leaves me wanting more. I guess you could say that as far as this man is concerned, I am one of those book groupies!
So you can imagine my excitement today when I just randomly checked out The Official Nicholas Sparks Website, as I tend to do from time to time, and there was a blurb on it about his new book, coming out this September or October, apparently to be named Dear John! That will have been about a year since his last book, At First Sight, which BFF gave me for my birthday last year and I quickly devoured it over Christmas break, so a new one has been long overdue. Needless to say, this bit of news made my day - I can't wait for it to come out!!

You Can Do It...Can't You?

I'm not much of a sports person; but I have been tuning in pretty religiously to the NBA Finals. Not just tuning in, but actually heartily rooting for Miami (I guess if I can't have NY, I'll root for my "other" home team). And honestly, last night's game was pitiful. Pitiful! It was almost like watching Dallas play a high school team. I was so disappointed! Grrr. I'm really hoping that Miami can get their act together for Tuesday's game...
Also, Blogger sucks. Why is it that every time I try to post something, there's a problem? People are waiting to read my endless thoughts on life here, Blogger!! Come on!!!

One More Thing...
College Roomie emailed me today to chastise me for not having emailed her all week. I admit, I have been a bad email buddy, and I apologize. However, she did mention that she had read my blogs for the last two weeks and so she was pretty much up to date on what was going on in my neck of the woods. And for that, I just have to express how awesome technology is. The fact that I can post stuff about myself anonymously for the world to read (if anyone out there is actually reading), but also so that one of my very best friends who lives far away can see what I've been up to even when I am MIA from her inbox? That is truly priceless.
On that note, I'm off to write College Roomie an email and "really" catch up - you didn't think I post EVERYTHING on here, did you?? ;-)

Was Blind But Now I See

I went to the eye doctor today. It was the first time in almost two years, so it was the first time I had been there since starting law school. You know how you hear about too much studying making you blind? Well, it apparently is not just a myth.
I've needed glasses since I was about seven years old. I was the dorky kid in second grade wearing the big pink glasses. I even had a pink string holder on the glasses, just in case they might spontaneously fly off of my face for no reason at all and I wouldn't be able to find them (it's memories like this that get me pondering what my mother could possibly have been thinking). Anyway, needless to say that without my contacts, my vision is not so great; but ever since I started law school, I have actually perceived my vision getting worse. At first I thought it was my imagination, since I had not experienced having to squint since elementary school; but then, as more Powerpoint presentations got increasingly difficult to take notes from, I knew I had to make a trip to the good old optometrist. And you know what? He confirmed my fears. My prescription had worsened. Boo. I did, however, get a free trial pair of a new brand of contacts that I wanted to try, so until the ones I ordered come in and the glasses I had made up are finished, I can see clearly!! No more squinting! So the lack of squinting means I can keep the Botox away for a couple of more years. And that's always a good thing.

What is the Holdup??!??!!?

Ok, enough is enough, people. I can't take it anymore. My last final was on May 12th. To date, I still don't know how I did last semester.
You know what, law school professors? Grade the exams already. Really. It's your ONLY JOB as a law school professor! All semester long, you come in, give the same lecture that you've been giving for the last twenty years, distribute the same handouts, and read off of the same Powerpoint presentation that you have for numerous classes. You job only really kicks in ONCE a semester, when it's time to grade the exams. Granted, I understand that there are quite a lot of exams; but it's not like you don't have assistants! And you've had A MONTH! A MONTH! I only wish that when I was given an assignment at school or work, I could take my sweet ass time with it, and maybe hand it in a month later. And that it would be acceptable. Not only acceptable, but that I would be a revered student/clerk.
I probably check anywhere between ten to 55 times a day to see if grades are posted yet. This is ridiculous. And while I know I am OCD about this, I don't think that I am alone.
The suspense is killing me!!!!!!!

I Just Love Being a Girl

I had the pleasure today of going to get a mani and pedi. Much needed, by the way, since it had been about two weeks since my last one - I know, I know - gasp!! So as I was sitting in the massaging pedicure chair, being pampered to my heart's content, I started thinking about how much fun it is to be a girl, and how I cannot understand why some women don't appreciate the greatness that comes with being a woman to its fullest extent.
I love makeup, I love nailpolish, I ADORE shoes (I have an addiction), I love clothes, and products, and you name it, if it's girly, I love it and want it. I have had people tell me that my focus and love of all things feminine makes me seem "ditzy" and "shallow." Now, I'll admit that I can at times be a bit of a flake; but come on now, who isn't??
Just because a woman likes to put on makeup and get her nails and hair done and look great doesn't make her shallow, or unintelligent, or even conceited. Quite the contrary - a woman that can accentuate her assets in such a manner is only more powerful than one who does not. An intelligent woman that looks put together and carries herself in a confident manner holds the world in the palm of her hand. That is what makes women so amazing, and what distinguishes us from men!
Now that the pampering is over, I must start doing some of my dreaded reading for my summer class. Work at The Firm isn't going to be leaving me all that much time for reading during the week, so I have to try to cram it all in over the weekend - boo. Oh well, at least it's rainy out...but rainy weekend days are such perfect Lifetime movie days, it seems a shame to waste it on Employment Law!!

Pup v. The Mailman

Why do dogs hate the mail carrier so? Well, maybe not all dogs; but at least Pup does. Every single day, it's a battle when Mailman comes to deliver the mail. He usually shows up between 11:30 and noon, but I don't need to check the time to know when he gets here - Pup makes it known, loud and clear, that Mailman is here. He begins howling, barking, going NUTS the second Mailman starts making his way up to the house. The closer he gets, the louder Pup gets; and if Pup is outside when Mailman gets here, well it's even worse. He runs at the gate, yelping and howling as if the devil himself were at the door dropping off the mail.
Mind you, Pup is not like this with anyone else who comes to the door. It's just the mail carrier; and it doesn't really matter if it's a different mail carrier than usual, such as when Mailman goes on vacation - same reaction. I think it's pretty funny, but I do feel bad for Mailman who must roll his eyes, bracing himself for the annoyance, every time he has to come to our house.
Today Pup and I went for a stroll, and on our way home, we ran into Mailman. Pup was surprisingly not at all bothered by Mailman, and was his usual, friendly self. I guess the problem is only when Mailman approaches the house?
In any event, Mailman produced a treat from his pocket and asked Pup if he "could buy his friendship"? Pup gobbled up the treat of course, and Mailman and I discussed whether tomorrow would be the usual debacle.
Somehow, I don't think that this battle is over yet - and unfortunately, it's one that I don't think poor Mailman stands a chance of winning.
Happy June, ya'll!!

I'm Back!

Hello again!!! I have returned!! Vacation was super nice and so relaxing. We had a great time. It's so nice to get away, but I have to say, it is nice to come home. The whole vacation I was convinced that I had left the front door unlocked! Also, I really missed Pup. A lot. More than I thought I was going to miss him! We had to kennel him, and it really broke my heart to do so, even though the place he was staying at was really nice. When we picked him up on Sunday, he was absolutely gleeful (as was I)! It was nice to be home and have Pup home too! :-)
Meanwhile, it has been absolutely stifling since I got back. I really tried to not fire up the central air there for a few days. I gave it my best and suffered in the heat of the house; but today I could not take it anymore. At 83 degrees, I turned it on, and now it's lovely in here. Only I am scared for my electric bill, considering it's still only May.
And speaking of money, I still have not started my summer job. I think I might start next week. The Firm is pretty flexible as to my hours, which is nice. I do start my summer classes tomorrow though - grr! I feel like I just finished studying - and can I just mention that I have only gotten ONE grade back so far??!! ONE. It has been a whole 18 days since my last final - I would think that maybe I could get TWO grades here...but just ONE? It's pure torture.
On another note, Hubby and I saw a few movies since I blogged last, so I'll give a mini little rundown of each in case anyone is interested in seeing these:
1. The Da Vinci Code - I really liked it. I liked it so much, in fact, that I bought the book while on vaca and started reading it poolside. I have to say, so far the movie was very true to the book, only the book goes into more detail (which was to be expected, of course). I really enjoyed the movie in that it was along the lines of National Treasure, and I like those types of movies. However, I really cannot see what all the Catholic hubbub is about. This is a fictional story, people. Is it conceivably plausible? Sure. But it's still just a STORY created by a novelist. It is meant to entertain, and entertaining it is. I give it THREE pounding gavels.
2. X-Men: The Last Stand - If you liked the other two X-men movies, I think you will like this one too. It ties up a lot of loose ends but also leaves the faint possibility that we might see the X-Men again. Obviously not Oscar material, but it's a fun, mindless sort of adventure flick. My rating: 2 3/4 pounding gavels.
3. Match Point - Here is one that I was disappointed in myself for not seeing it earlier, considering that I am such a Woody Allen fan. I thought the movie was somewhat of a departure from what I expected from Allen, but I guess that's what pure genius is all about anyway - constant reinvention. The plot is great, the actors are wonderful, and the end is just absolutely gripping. A couple of days later, and I am STILL thinking about this movie. That's the sign of a great one. My rating - FOUR pounding gavels.
4. Transamerica - last but certainly not least. I loved this movie. It made me laugh and cry in a span of less than two hours. At times it was absolutely hysterical, but overall, I thought it was so incredibly sad. The very thought of not feeling whole in my own body is so incredibly depressing, something no one should be subjected to, and that is what this movie addresses. In the end, it's not about being gay, but about people and seeing what is beneath our exteriors. My rating - 3 1/2 pounding gavels.
Well, that's about it for now - Hubby and I just bought a new grill this weekend (woo hoo!!!) so of course I've been in a cooking frenzy (which, for anyone who knows me, this is VERY atypical of me). But the upside is that we get to eat cheeseburgers every night! Who cares if I'll be a moose by August??!! Not me!!

Up, Up, and Away!

Well, the time has finally arrived for Hubby and I to go on vacation!! Destination Somewhere Fun! Woo hoo!! I had so many good intentions to bring a couple of books I have been itching to read, including Wendy Boucher's new one, PARVENUE THROWS A PARTY; but alas, despite working through my recent illness on my Law Review competition paper in an effort to finish it before vacation, I am still not done. So guess what is coming with me on the vaca? You guessed it, the competition assignment. Luckily, though, it is nearly done, so hopefully it won't take too much time away from the sun :-) And if I didn't partake in the competition, the guilt would just eat me up alive.
So, because I know you will all miss me sooooooo much this week (I'll be back on Saturday, so don't despair!), I'll leave you all with this. Every time I watch it I just can't stop laughing! Have an awesome week, ya'll!!!

Best New Law Show on TV

I don't usually make two posts in one day, but since I'm "home sick," I'm making an exception.
Tonight was the season finale of NBC's Conviction. I have been watching this show since the start of the season. I was a little concerned about it during the first couple of episodes, and I was not sure that it would really take off; but as the season has progressed, it just keeps getting better. All the actors are terrific, particularly Eric Balfour (of whom I've been a fan of since my beloved show Six Feet Under), and Julianne Nicholson. I hope it will be renewed.
In other news, I got around to watching the season finale of The O.C. I thought it was pretty sad. I'm sorry to see Marissa go, since I have grown to really like her, despite her constantly sour face and "JOHNNY" remarks. I do think, however, that her death throes could have been a little more pronounced; but considering she could be the actress with the most flat affect of our time, I guess she did a good enough job. Poor Ryan - how much more can this boy take? I hope next season he gets some psychological counseling. I sure don't want to see him don that leather cuff again that he wore all through Seasons One and Two.

Achoo!

I am not having a good day today. For the past couple of days I have been sick as can be. It turns out I have strep throat, but clearly there are other issues as well since I can't stop coughing, sneezing, and blowing my nose. Boo!! What's more troubling is that Hubby and I are going on vaca on Monday, and if I'm not better by then, I'll just cry. We have been looking forward to this trip for so long and to have it be ruined by the flu/strep throat/whatever will be dreadful! I will continue to take naps and drink tea in the hopes that those remedies really work. I don't like chicken soup, so I don't think I'll be having any of that.
Then, to top off the fun and wonderfulness that today has been, I was checking my bank account balance, and noticed that all seven bills that I mailed out last Saturday have not been cashed. I called all seven merchants and inquired if they had received my payments. Of course they had not. I called the post office to see if the mailbox that I had used had spontaneously blown up or something in the last week and I didn't hear about it. Nothing there either. Finally, I called the bank, and they told me none of the checks had been cashed (durr, I knew THAT already), and that my only option was to stop payment on the checks; but then that opens a whole other can of worms in that if the mail is just being slow, then if the cancelled checks are eventually received, I will be charged a fee for trying to cash it, and while I can most likely get the fee waived, that will mean another round of phone calls and drama for me to deal with.
Rsh - why can't anything be easy?? I'm tired of being an adult!

Not Again

I found this on Pink is the New Blog today. It's the trailer for the newest 9/11 movie to hit the theaters this season, this time entitled, World Trade Center. It's directed by Oliver Stone and stars Nicholas Cage, Maria Bello, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, among others.
I've already expressed my utter disdain for this genre of movies based on biggest tragedy in American history in recent years, so I won't be redundant. I just still cannot understand why anyone feels the need to relive this pain, so soon after we've all just about managed to go on with our lives. At least this movie, though, recounts the story of the survival of two Port Authority police officers, so it is more hopeful than the sham that was United 93.
Despite my better judgment, I watched the trailer for World Trade Center; and I almost burst into tears.

This Should Be Fun!
I found this trailer on IFilm, and just had to post it! I really enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. I thought it was funny and witty from start to finish. Plus, what can I say, I'm a sucker for a chicklet book, not to mention a chick-flick. So when College Roomie told me about it being made into a movie, of course I was delighted; and what is even more thrilling, is that Meryl Streep plays the vicious boss Miranda Priestly. I absolutely love love love Meryl Streep. I think she's fabulous in everything she does, and think she'll do great in this role. Apparently it comes out in theaters June 30th, so I will definitely be watching out for it - in the meantime, the movie's website will have to suffice!

Tryin' to Make Some Dough

I'm so excited today - I just listed my first items for sale on Ebay! Hubby has bought things before from that site, but I've never really gotten involved, much less with selling anything. I had about five study guides left over from my first year which is now dunzo (woo hoo!), so I figured that I would list them on Ebay and see how it goes! Should be fun! If they sell, Lord knows I have a world of crap in the basement that I will consider listing! This could be my new summer obsession!

Time to Shop!

Yesterday, in honor of the end of my FIRST YEAR (YAY!), I went shopping!
First of all, I LOVE shopping. Passionately. And there is nothing better than shopping when you have nothing else on your mind that you have to do. That's exactly how I felt yesterday.
Actually, prior to starting shopping, I met up with an old friend from Cubicle Hell for lunch. It was nice to see her (she paid for lunch, which was even nicer!) since I had not seen her in a while, and it also reminded me that leaving Cubicle Hell was the best decision I ever made. Not that I have ever forgotten, but it's always good to get a reminder every now and again, particularly after you've been living at the library for two weeks and have the fear of God in your that you failed your exams.
Anyway, my shopping was quite successful. Got some great bargains at my fav stores, the Gap, J.Crew, and Banana Republic (ok, so there were no bargains at Banana, BUT I did have gift certificates left over from Christmas, so it was like I got a bargain because I didn't have to pay as much as I ordinarily would have). Nothing new at Old Navy, so I was a little disappointed, but that might be because I have everything cute from there already due to previous shopping trips.
Overall a great day! Today, off to the 'rents for Mom's Day!
Happy Mother's Day, y'all!

Eh...Why Not
I took this meme from Favorable Dicta because it looked fun, and because I can't really sleep thinking about tomorrow's "final final", so what the hey. Take it if you like, but let me know so I can see what's doing someone else's head.
I AM: feeling kinda wired.
I WANT: to do decently on all my finals.
I WISH: to do decently on all my finals.
I HATE: that I won't know how I did on my finals until next month.
I MISS: having a life outside of the library.
I FEAR: failure.
I HEAR: voices....too bad they can't tell me the answers to tomorrow's final.
I WONDER: how I did in Crim Law.
I REGRET: not tabbing my Civ Pro outline tonight.
I AM NOT: going to shower before I go to bed because I just don't feel like it.
I DANCE: with my dog.
I SING: constantly - much to the chagrin of those around me. Even Pup.
I CRY: when I think about not having done well on those finals.
I AM NOT ALWAYS: this crazed...I promise I'll be back to "normal" after tomorrow (whatever normal means for me).
I MAKE WITH MY HANDS: small fists as I think of the brutalization that awaits me tomorrow during my exam.
I WRITE: on this blog when I should be going to bed. Or tabbing that outline.
I CONFUSE: personal jurisdiction and subject matter jurisdiction all the time. Grrr.

This is NOT What I Pay Tuition For

I am happy to announce that today concludes my marathon occupation of the law library.
As a permanent resident of the library for the last two weeks, I have noticed things go from good, to fair, to just plain poor. The vending machine is empty (with the exception of maybe those weird orange crackers with peanut butter). The napkins in the cafeteria are all gone. And the bathroom is a disgusting mess. There are rolls of toilet paper strewn about. The floor is STICKY (from what, God only knows, and I cringe at the possibilities). There are strange substances of varying colors in and around the toilets. I have never been a fan of utilizing public facilities, but using the bathroom at school lately has been worse than using the bathroom at a county park in the middle of July. It's just plain nasty. Is this what my excessive amount of tuition pays for? So that the law students are abandoned by all during finals-time, including housekeeping? Come on, Law School!! At least clean the bathroom!

Mission: Go Away! Please Choose to Accept It!

I was more than a little thrilled to see this article on www.cnn.com today. Apparently Mission Impossible III didn't live up to everyone's box office expectations. I LOVE IT. Gee, maybe people are fed up with "TomKat," and silent births, ridiculous couch-leaping antics, and rants against anti-depressants. I sure am. I might catch this flick on HBO (or maybe I'll just wait for TNT), but I'm sure as hell not going to waste $10 on watching this lunatic's latest project on the big screen.
On another note, I am exactly halfway done with finals. Unfortch, the remaining ones are pretty hard and I'm losing steam - fast. Wish me luck!

It's Picking Down

I have been an absolute die-hard O.C. fan since the show's inception. I have not missed a single episode (thanks to the modern marvel that is DVR), and I typically watch every one with relish and delight. However, lately I have felt that my precious O.C. is missing something.
Last night's episode was disappointing to say the least. The whole Summer trying to get Seth's confession back off of Sandy's desk? Pathetic. Teresa's reprise? Please just go away already! Ryan helping Volchok steal a car??!!!! Come ON, RYAN!!!! I think a little assault charge would have been WAY better than being an accomplice to larceny and conspiring with this low life. Give me a break. When is Ryan ever going to shed his Chino ways?
Meanwhile thank God that The Newport Group's building burned down along with Sandy's little model for the hospital because I cannot stand another second of that storyline.
Next week supposedly someone "will not make it through the night." At this point, everyone's life is so pathetic that it's hard to predict who the lucky one will be to make a dramatic exit. You know what? If I was Kirsten, I'd take up drinking too.
(And yes, I have a final tomorrow but I did take the time last night to watch The O.C....I told you, I'm a die-hard fan, even when it's bad.)

MEMEmememe!

I didn't actually get tagged on this one, but found it on The BLS and, because my brain is fried with studying for Crim Law, and I am too wired to go to sleep just yet, I decided to indulge in....
FIVE THINGS
1. What were you doing ten years ago? I was a Junior in high school (GOD I'm getting OLD). I was probably stressing about finals then too, so I guess, while so much has changed, everything has stayed the same.
2. What were you doing one year ago? I was in the midst of selling my house and buying another closer to where I would be attending law school in the Fall. However, Hubby and I didn't actually find our house until Memorial Day weekend, so right about now I was probably panicking that we were going to be living at a hotel for the rest of our lives because we couldn't find a house. So again, stressing! (I seem to do a lot of that!)
3. Five snacks you enjoy:
- chocolate chip cookies
- Swedish fish
- Dannon Activia yogurt
- strawberries with whipped cream
- chocolate chip ice cream
4. Five songs to which you know all the lyrics:
- Burnin' Up - Madonna
- Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
- Kiss - Prince
- Fill it Up Again - Indigo Girls
- Open Arms - Journey
God there's so many more....
5. Five things you would do if you were a millionaire:
- Pay off all mine and hubby's student loans.
- Pay off our mortgage.
- Save
- Invest
- Spend a little
(I mean, realistically, it all depends on how many millions we're talking about here - $1 mil, not much I can do besides what I outlined; but $30 mil? The possibilities are endless.)
6. Five things you like doing:
- Spending time with Hubby.
- Playing with Pup.
- Reading
- Gardening
- Napping
7. Five things you would never wear again. (I really hate to say never, though, because I always seem to regret saying it, but in any event....)
- Hypercolor shirts (remember those? You would press your hand on them and they would change color? Yea...I had a couple of those and I thought I was soooo cool.)
- Cavariccis
- Wigwam socks - in multiples
- Culottes
- B.U.M. Equipment ANYTHING!
8. Five favorite toys:
- Cars
- iPod
- DVR
- Laptop
- Dustbuster (really a must have for any pet owner - CANNOT live without it!)
I'm too tired to tag anyone, but would love to know if anyone chooses to do it so I can read all about you too! :-)
Ok, I'm off to watch Forensic Files and be lulled to sleep - night!

A Little Study Break

After being at the library for nine hours yesterday, I came home and decided to spend some well-deserved time with Hubby and Pup, and we decided to watch The Family Stone. I really hadn't heard too much about this movie, but I was excited to see it because there were so many actors that I like in it (Rachel McAdams, Diane Keaton and Claire Danes being among them).
I won't spoil it for anyone - it starts out really cute, then kind of gets lost in the middle, and just as I was starting to think that this was another movie with a lot of big names that ends up being dreadful, it really found its way towards the end, and I have to say, almost elicited a tear at the last scene.
It's not the best movie, it's not the worst movie, but I think it might best depict how every family is strange and deranged but unique and wonderful all at the same time.
I definitely recommend this movie, especially during finals time when I think we (students) tend to forget the success that really matters (family, love, closeness) when we get wrapped up in trying to be academically successful.

Ready, Set, Study!

Today is essentially my last day of freedom until the middle of May. My first exam is in exactly [gulp] six days! Tomorrow I'm basically moving myself into the law library to start hardcore studying.
Today, though, although I am finishing up my outlines, I am going to somewhat enjoy myself. I am going to go tanning (gearing up for vaca after finals - woo hoo!), talk Pup for a walk (which will totally make his day - I love making his day!), spend a few precious moments with Hubby before I disappear for two weeks, and maybe even get out to the garden to see what's doing with my tulips. Hopefully this day will keep me going when the going gets rough!
All in all, though, despite all the torture that is finals time, I am happy - I am happy because taking finals this time around means putting my first year of law school in my back pocket; it means that after finals, I will possess exactly 1/3 of the material necessary for me to be a (hopefully successful) attorney; and, no matter how bad it gets sitting in the library, deprived of sunlight and subsisting only on what I can get out of a vending machine, it still beats any day at a dead-end job in Cubicle Hell.

I Heart Chris Moltisanti

Weird little episode of Sopranos last night. No real progress was made with any of the current storylines, so it was more of an amusing episode than anything else. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it.
The episode started out with a fun Sopranos killing when Rusty gets taken out by the Italians as he and his driver are backing the Benz out of the driveway. This show always has a way of giving you a little detail at the end of a death to make it more genuine - in this scene, the Benz kept rolling down the driveway after the two men were shot. I was hoping that a car would come and side swipe the Benz, but I guess that would have been a little overly-dramatic/overly-Hollywood. I understand.
Artie has troubles at the restaurant with dwindling patrons. To add to his misery, he finds out that Benny has been stealing credit card numbers from the restaurant, causing Artie's Amex privileges to be revoked until the investigation is concluded. Artie goes to Benny's house in the middle of the night and beats him to a bloody pulp. Tony wasn't happy about this, but I say, good for Artie.
Chris goes to LA to see if he can get Ben Kingsley to star in his "Saw meets The Godfather" movie. It's obvious Ben can't believe he got roped into meeting with Chris and Little Carmine, so he goes to the "Luxury Lounge" while Chris and Little Carmine tag along, still trying to get him interested in their "project." Chis is blown away completely by all the free stuff that celebrities get at these things (I was pretty blown away too - and disgusted that celebrities get so much stuff for free when they can totally afford to buy these things. How about they have Luxury Lounges for law students??!! I think Westlaw and/or Lexis Nexis should TOTALLY spring for that). For the rest of the episode Chris haunts Kingsley about getting into the Luxury Lounge for himself. When Kingsley makes it clear that he can't get Chris in, Chris and Little Carmine rob Lauren Bacall of one of those "celebrity" baskets as she's coming back from an awards show. The best part is, they punch Lauren Bacall in the face!!! I mean, the woman is practically a relic and they punch her!! She's a tough cookie though - she drops a couple of F-bombs after the robbery. Classic.
That was pretty much it - one upset with the episode, though. I SERIOUSLY love animals, and I was disturbed when Artie shot the bunny in the yard that was making a little snack of his plants. Bunnies have to eat too; and then he later COOKS UP the bunny for a couple of restaurant customers that came in as the place was closing for the night.
The moral of the story? Don't eat at any restaurant at closing time.

Um....No Thanks

I got a phone call today from a telemarketer. I answered the phone, and after identifying herself as someone from some memorial park, the telemarketer informed me that I had been randomly chosen to receive a "free burial plot." Slightly in disbelief, I said, "WHAT??!!" She again repeated that my telephone number had been randomly chosen to be the recipient of a "free burial plot." I shouted into the phone, "I do NOT NEED a burial plot!" Then she politely said, "Ok, thank you." and hung up the phone. Are you kidding me??!! I mean, I know finals time is rough, but come on!!

On the Verge

It's happening again. Finals are coming. I went through my planner today and determined that my first day of being at the law library for at LEAST 12 hours a day is just a little over a week away; and then I will have to remain at said law library for two. entire. weeks. When I realized that, my breath came a little quicker, I felt vaguely light-headed, and black spots appeared before my eyes. That's when I knew. I am, once again, getting very close to a nervous breakdown.
The breakdown will not happen overnight. Today's feelings are just the preamble, if you will, of the nightmarish crap-storm that will descend upon my life in several very (very) short days. The feelings will intensify, and ultimately culminate in one large nervous breakdown, probably right before my first exam, and maybe another before my last. A breakdown that will necessitate the utilization of some sort of anxiolytic, which honestly, I think should be prescribed to every law student in America.
Just thinking about heading into the War Zone that others might know as exam period makes a shudder go down my spine. I just hope I can make it out alive.

I'm It!

I was tagged by Wendy today on this, and despite the nagging feeling that I might horrify everyone into never reading my blog again, I'm going to provide you with:
Six Weird/Interesting Things That You Didn't Know About Me
(although I'm pretty sure they're all weird and not that interesting!!)
1. I am obsessed with The Weather Channel. I downloaded their desktop program so that I am constantly aware of what the temperature and current humidity levels are.
2. In conjunction with my weather obsession, I have a "dressing chart" that I utilize along with the weather, to decide what I am going to wear every day. For example, there are categories, like 70-75 degrees which would call for a short sleeved shirt but jeans, not shorts. That's a simplified example. The actual chart is somewhat more complex.
3. Along with the weather/dressing chart, I keep my clothing in my closet in what I refer to as the "rotation." Whatever shirt I wear today will go at the back of the line, and I will not wear that shirt again until it comes back to the front. Tomorrow's shirt will be one of the first in the line, depending on what matches with what (I will not sacrifice fashion for the sake of my OCD!).
4. On most days, I count calories. I will keep little post-it notes at my desk detailing what I eat. This is so I don't forget how many calories I am taking in and therefore I don't end up looking like a moose. During finals in particular, this calorie-counting becomes vital, and I suppose it's my way of exerting control over at least one aspect of my life.
5. On the topic of food, I love cereal dust. Most people hate that dusty substance at the bottom of the cereal box when all the flakes are gone, but I actually look forward to it. I like the mush that it creates when it's mixed with milk.
6. I brush my teeth in the shower. Every day. Twice a day. I even keep my toothbrush in the shower.
I admit, a few of these things sound rather freakish; but I am NOT crazy!!!! I guess everyone has bizzare things that they do, right??!!
So I'm tagging The BLS and D on this one. I'm not giong to be the only one getting carted away on the crazy train!

What Would Emily Post Say?

Recently I was invited to a friend's wedding. The invitation was addressed to Hubby and me. However, H., who has lived with his girlfriend for several years now, was invited to the same wedding sans guest. I found this deeply disturbing. Clearly the line was drawn at "marriage" being the status that would require paying for two guests vs. just one at this particular wedding; but is that really what is the correct thing to do? What about same-sex couples? Should it be ok that their respective partners be excluded from social functions such as weddings merely because they "only live together"? While I wholeheartedly respect the institution of marriage, I also respect those who choose to not enter into it, and those who legally cannot. I can't help but think that by excluding "life partners" but including spouses is the bride's way of imposing her social mores on her guests in that she will exclude whom she wants. Obviously, as the bride, she is within her right to do that; but should we, as a society condone this type of couple-ostracism? Am I looking too much into this? I would love to hear what other people think about this topic!

It's All About "One"

Yet another fabulous episode of Sopranos tonight. Every Sunday this show just keeps getting better! So here's the rundown: Tony goes back to "work," and hires a Bloomfield meathead to drive him around. Johnny Sack's daughter Allegra (Chris, it's allergy medication, not cold medication) is getting married and Johnny requests a reprieve from his jail cell to attend. The court grudgingly allows it, but makes Johnny foot the bill for the US marshals that have to chaperone him. The Soprano family goes to the wedding, and Tony is feeling a little wistful for grandchildren, which he expresses to a less-than-amused-looking Meadow. Which, by the way, as a sidebar, Meadow is looking absolutely stunning this season. Looks like there might be trouble in paradise with her and Finn though; but I digress.
There is tight security at the $425,000 Sacramoni wedding, and Tony nearly passes out when security makes him take off his shoes. Johnny asks Tony to "take care of some business" for him, using a table of partially senile senior citizens as a ruse for the marshals, and Tony agrees. Just as the wedding is wrapping up, the marshals come and haul a bawling Johnny back to the prison, and Ginny hits the floor. Literally. I liked the shot of the knee highs. Funny how the show can make you pity a cold blooded murder and start making you rationalize the idea that he might be entitled to watch his daughter get married in peace.
Anyway, Tony starts to worry, after talking to Melfi, that his recent health problems might appear as a sign of weakness. As a result, he beats up the meathead and subsequently vomits in the bathroom - but hey, people only see what you want them to see.
Meanwhile, Junior is thrown into a mental facility and tries to argue with his lawyer that he doesn't belong there. Right.
The highlight of the episode, however, comes when Vito tells his wife he has some "collections" to do late in the night. Those collections, however, entail donning a leather outfit and heading to a homosexual club where he's having a hopping good time. That is, until a couple of mob friends drop in for some business, and catch Vito in the act. He tries to play it off as a joke, but of course they're not buying it. A distraught Vito goes home, packs the suicide essentials, and checks into a motel. He makes an erratic call to Silvio, and that's the last we see of poor, repressed, Vito.
I guess we can assume that he, er, lost his head?

Burning the Midnight....Plastic?

It has finally happened. I have had a real, honest to goodness, computer meltdown. Literally. Apparently I have been pasted to my laptop for so long tonight, that the small but powerful reading lamp that I lit over my papers and books (and inadvertently over the edge of my laptop), melted the edge of the laptop, and left a wrinkly, distorted edge. At least the laptop still works; but maybe this is a sign that I need to stop working for the day.

Even When You're Not Having Fun

I really feel like I'm spinning my wheels here. All week long I struggled to work on my paper that's due next week. Somehow, though, between reading for every class, and well, just LIVING, I haven't written down a single word; and the best part was that I had every intention of handing in a DRAFT BEFORE handing in the actual thing!! I don't know how time just gets by us! Oh well. I guess my weekend fun and games are mapped out for me...

For the Love of Money

I am positively disgusted right now. I saw on www.cnn.com today an interview with a writer and a mother of one of the passengers who died on a plane in 9/11 discussing the upcoming movie United 93. This was the first I had heard of such a movie coming out. So I watched the trailer. And I was appalled. Is this really necessary?? Do we really need a movie depicting a studio's rendition of what might have occurred on that day? It's not like anyone has even remotely forgotten about what happened, considering that it was not even five years ago! It seems incredibly distasteful to release a movie about such a horrific event, so recently after it occurred, for the mere sake of making a buck. Let's call a spade a spade, people - this movie is not about educating anyone, it's not about providing historical reference to an event that is fading in the minds of the new generation who did not live through it - it's about cashing in on one of the biggest tragedies in American history. And for that, Universal and everyone else who supported the making of this film should be ashamed of themselves.

They're All Gonna Laugh At You

The last prom I went to was nearly ten years ago...until this weekend. It was time for my school's "prom." You know, that yearly event at the law school where everyone decides to bust out their Sunday best, get drunk and make fools of themselves in front of the people that they will have to see again on Monday and who probably will not forget the fact that they were dancing on chairs in an inebriated stupor.
I'll admit, I was excited to get dressed up for once, since my daily uniform pretty much consists of jeans and sneakers. When I got to the place, though, I couldn't believe that more than a few girls had actually got their hair done. And I mean DONE. As in Cinderella-this-is-my-wedding-day hairdos. Also, it was rather amusing how people that I don't talk to in school and likewise don't talk to me were all of a sudden my long-lost kindergarten pals with the "OhmyGod you look SO pretty, I LOVE your dress!" and the airkisses.
As the night progressed and the alcohol continued to flow, the antics became more amusing. People were literally grinding on what became a very sweaty dance floor. It was great to try to guess who would be shacking up for the night and painfully regretting it in the morning. My underwear-baring classmate was certainly there, thankfully with his pants ON this time, although H. told me that she also spotted him on a separate day again stripping.
All in all, an entertaining evening, providing some much needed down time from the nightmarish piles of work and stress that is law school, and it was nice how all the competition seemed to go out the window as all students were on even ground for one night.
